How to use this template
A training matrix answers one question quickly: who needs what training, and where do they stand? Employees run down the left, topics run across the top, and each cell captures the current status. Here is a simple way to work through it.
- Pick a preset to start fast, or list your people by renaming the example employees or using Add employee.
- List your training topics across the top — safety, privacy, conduct, role-specific skills, and anything else you need to track.
- Click each cell to cycle through Required, Completed, Overdue, N/A, and back to blank until it reflects reality.
- Export a CSV to store the snapshot or share it, and print the grid for a meeting or audit binder.
Tips and common questions
How often should I update a training matrix?
As often as your training changes — typically monthly, or whenever someone joins, changes roles, or finishes a course. Because a manual matrix only reflects the moment you last edited it, pick a cadence you can actually keep.
What do the statuses mean?
Required means the person needs the training but has not finished it. Completed means it is done. Overdue means a deadline has passed. N/A means the topic does not apply to that person. Blank means you have not decided yet.
Are the presets legally complete?
No. The presets are generic starting points to save you typing — they do not represent a complete or compliant training program for any industry or jurisdiction. Adapt the topics to your own requirements.
Is my data saved anywhere?
Your matrix is saved only in this browser (local storage) so it is here when you come back, and you can clear it any time with Clear saved data. Nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers — export a CSV to keep a copy elsewhere.
How do I keep this current without editing cells by hand?
